TUC Supports On-Line Activists In Fight Against Cuts

Going To Work is a project of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) to unite people who want to see greater fairness and more common sense in the way we work for our economy, and the ways our economy works for us. The organisation works with unions, campaign groups, charities, politicians, media, and anyone who can help to make a change to public awareness and government and party political policies.

going to Work logoNetroots UK is a one day event to network and inspire progressive activists working on the web. Saturday 8 January, Congress House, Central London, WC1B 3LS. Bloggers, tweeters and online campaigners from around the UK will be coming together face to face in London for the event which comes as pressure grows across the progressive movement in response to the government’s programme of harsh spending cuts.

Five hundred online activists will attend a day of workshops and presentations, ranging from hands-on training in digital communications, to sharing good practice from other campaigns, as well as wider debates on the best strategies for progressive digital activism.

Sessions will cover topics such as building campaigns against local spending cuts, engaging effectively online with MPs, producing videos for the web, and using satire to spread campaign messages.

Linking together activists from the worlds of progressive politics, economic justice, international development, trade unions, community groups and more, the event is a first step towards a more connected and effective progressive movement online, echoing the groundbreaking work of the annual Netroots Nation conference in the US.

In a press release this week highlighting the event to be held at TUC HQ, Congress House in London, Goign To Work is urging all like minded people to get involved:

"We're helping to put on the UK's biggest event for online progressive activists. On Saturday 8 January 2011, hundreds of people will be gathering in central London for Netroots UK - a day of strategy, training and networking."

Urging support, the press release exmplains:

It's certainly the right time for it .... and pressure is growing right across the progressive movement in response to the government's programme of harsh spending cuts. Join us and your fellow activists at Congress House on 8 January. We'll have workshops and training session on digital campaigning (from basic topics like starting a new blog or learning to shoot online video, through to planning out whole new online campaign tools).

It goes on:

"We'll be sharing examples of what's worked for other campaigns, and holding wider debates on the best strategies for progressive digital activism (like how we link up online to campaign against cuts to public services).
Bringing together activists from the worlds of, trades unionism, progressive politics, economic justice, international development, community groups and more, Netroots UK is a first step towards a more connected and effective progressive movement online, echoing the groundbreaking work of the annual Netroots Nation conference in the US."

It Concludes:

" As Will Straw, Editor of influential blog Left Foot Forward, says: "Netroots Nation in the US inspired a generation to organise online and campaign offline against the greed, human rights abuses, and economic folly of the Bush administration. Netroots UK is the start of the digital fightback here against the Government's decimation of public services and dismantling of the welfare state."
